Design of a conical diffraction type plane holographic grating monochromator for use in the energy region of 1-4 keV

Koike, Masato; Namioka, Takeshi*

AIP Conference Proceedings 705, p.865 - 868, 2004/00

The high brightness soft X-ray sources have been playing an important role in frontier sciences and high technologies. Then it is often required to perform high-resolution spectroscopic measurements in the energy region of 1-10 keV by using a single instrument. Unfortunately, both the grating and the crystal spectrometer cannot meet the requirement satisfactorily, because of various problems they have in the efficiency, spectral resolution, and wavelength scanning range. To overcome these problems we have developed a conical diffraction type grating spectrometer for use in the 1-4 keV region. The spectrometer employs a toroidal mirror and a plane holographic grating to separate the imaging and dispersing functions. This spectrometer works both as monochromator and as spectrograph. In this paper, we describe details of the design and give the expected performance of the spectrometer for cases of practical interest in the use of soft X-ray synchrotron radiation and laboratory sources.

We developed a multi-crystal switching system on a cryogenically cooled monochromator of JAERI materials science beamline, BL11XU. In order to study our science, it is necessary for ensuring at least the energy range of 6 - 70keV to employ Si(111) and Si(311) crystals. The principle of the crystal switching is that, two pair of crystals is arranged side by side, and they are translated in horizontal direction for exchanging. Indium sheets were inserted between both sides of crystals in order to improve thermal contact. Some adjustment stages of the monochromator were removed to avoid the crystal vibration and a sheet heater was installed on an X-axis stage to prevent over-cooling of X-axis stages. The monochromator is under commissioning at present. In comparison with a previous indirect water cooling diamond (111) crystal monochromator, this monochromator provides high flux intensity from 4 times to 7 times. It takes only 5 minutes to exchange and adjust crystals geometry. This mechanism will be easily applied to other crystals, for example asymmetrical-cut crystals.

Characterization of cryogenically cooled dual symmetric silicon geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6keV to 70keV, we adopted the system of alternative dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. Before the experiment on BL11XU, the off-line evaluation was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling. With MoK$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$, rocking curves from the crystals were measured for the second crystal of the double-crystal diffractometer of parallel setting. Each of the observed FWHM was almost constant and identical to the calculated value wherever X-rays hit on the crystal surface. By the use of synchrotron radiation from the undulator the crystals were tested and then the characterization was performed. The observed intensities and rocking curves resulted in that each crystal was good for BL11XU and that the performance of X-ray reflection was improved.

We have developed a new method to extract only the orbit fluctuation caused by changing magnetic field error of an insertion device (ID). This method consists of two main parts. (i) The orbit fluctuation is measured with modulating the error field of the ID by using the real-time beam position measuring system. (ii) The orbit fluctuation depending on the variation of the error field of the ID is extracted by the filter applying the Wavelet Transform. We call this approach the amplitude modulation method. This analysis technique was applied to measure the orbit fluctuation caused by the error field of APPLE-2 type undulator (ID23) installed in the SPring-8 storage ring. We quantitatively measured two kinds of the orbit fluctuation which are the static term caused by the magnetic field error and the dynamic term caused by the eddy current on the ID23 chamber.

Two-dimensional X-ray focusing by crystal bender and mirrors

Yoneda, Yasuhiro; Matsumoto, Norimasa; Furukawa, Yukito*; Ishikawa, Tetsuya*

AIP Conference Proceedings 705 (CD-ROM), 4 Pages, 2003/00

Results are reported on the performance of a fixed height exit bender with an unribbed silicon (311) crystal. The anticlasic crveture can be minimized for a recutangular Si (311) focusing crystal with "clamped" or "builtin" boundary conditions if the length to width ratio of the crystal is 1.42. The test crystal used in this study was manufactured from a 98mm$$times$$90mm$$times$$2mm dimension of float zone silicon. After final etching, the ratio of the crystal is 1.435. The sub-millimeter sagittal focusing was achieved by using a 4-point bending mechanism in energy ranges from 30keV to 60keV.
